The thought of
ROGER
on 03 Sep 2011

Ah, Yes! Schopenhauer; the original “nutty professor” with the white hair in tufts above both temples. He can never have played Bridge, if he thought that “people had no thoughts to deal in, so they deal cards”. Considerable thought and calculation goes into remembering which cards have already been played, and working out from the bidding which cards are still to be played! The best of his quotes, I think, is “Almost all of our sorrows spring from our relations with other people!”  There, he was right!

I believe Schopenhauer must have read Horace. His thought here lacks the brevity of “Carpe Diem”, but is essentially the same thing.
“Life is short; make the most of it!” and “Be prepared for change, as nothing is forever.”

"A man's delight in looking forward to and hoping for some particular satisfaction is a part of the pleasure flowing out of it, enjoyed in advance. But this is afterward deducted, for the more we look forward to anything the less we enjoy it when it comes."
